Calculating your 9-18 year cycles: to know what's coming, you must know your past.
A series on Manifestation vs. Fate - uncovering the nature of destiny and choice
Note: In the first part of this series on discovering the truth of manifestation vs. fate or destiny vs. choice, we’re going to calculate your 9 -18 year cycles. This process is especially illuminating when viewing the past and seeing how the themes we experience each year, dictate our future. If you’re wondering if this information might encourage fear and anxiety within you, that’s something you’ll have to use your own discernment on when deciding to progress. I would encourage you to look beyond that initial reaction, and understand that once you know your life patterns, you’ll be able to see how the universe has continually provided for you, and how the seasons of earthquakes and evolution are paving the way toward your dreams. When you know there’s famine afoot, you also know that harvest is just around the corner. We don’t need to have supernatural gifts to know that the sun always makes an appearance after the storm. Moments of storms are always watering the ground for the fertility we asked for. Understanding your own life’s waves and weather patterns will increase your faith in divine timing, and ready your skill set in determining your own wheel of fate. When you know where you are in your 9 year cycle, you can begin to relax and allow, instead of fighting against the divine flow which only creates inner resistance and stress.
Exhibit A:
April 2005 to April 2006 was one of the stormiest years of my life, filled with cross country moves, broken bones, breakups, totaled cars, multiple midnight trips to the hospital in unfamiliar cities, flooded apartments, hurricanes, and psychological abuse. It wasn’t all traumatic though, there was plenty of adventure too that came in the form of stolen chocolate fountains from office parties, close calls with alligators, being serenaded by an indie band beneath my balcony, and late night walks with friends in haunted cemeteries. During this time, the north node was in Aries and the south node was in Libra, just as it is now. When the north node transits Aries in my chart, it’s going through the 8th house, where I have a stellium of personal planets. During these transits, I am always catapulted out of my comfort zone, and sent toward the unknown, my fears, and transformation. The year April 2005 to April 2006 is a Tower card year for me. While it may sound terrifying, (and it is!) it’s ALWAYS leading toward desired manifestations, destiny, and a higher timeline. The good news is, when you know a Tower year is coming, you’ll see how quickly the years following will be giving you a whole new life, the one you asked for and dreamed about.
(In the 9 year cycle following that Tower, I got married, started my dream business, received dream clients, got to travel to my heart’s content, and gave birth to my first child. This was not possible before my Tower year due to my own limiting beliefs.)
Travels, trauma, and unexpected dreams during this nine year cycle
When you know your own time line, you know when to expect life altering changes, and when to expect seasons of peace, love, and abundance. We’re going to be calculating the underlying patterns in your 9 - 18 year cycles, using astrology, numerology, and the tarot.
Every 9 years the transiting north node switches places. Currently the north node is in Aries, and the south node is in Libra. 9 years ago the north node was in Libra and the south node was in Aries.
Every 18 years the nodes return to the signs and houses they were in. That means, 18 years ago the north node was in Aries as it is now, and the south node was in the opposite sign of Libra. You will experience similar underlying energies during these transits. The house Aries rules in your individual chart is where you will be experiencing themes of what you went through 18 years ago. There will also be similarities 9 years ago, but in the opposite house. When the north node transits Aries in my 8th house (as it is now), I experience massive upheaval, facing fears of the unknown, in order to transform into the person that can receive the destiny I’ve asked for. When the north node is in Libra in the 2nd house, I go through upheaval as well, but it’s always leading me into comfort and security. I will experience extreme change every nine years, but I know when the north node is in Libra, there’s a bit of a softer landing. When the north node is in Aries, I know I better prepare for war.
Each year of your 1 - 9 cycle will line up with a tarot card that represents the energy you are moving through. The years don’t begin with January and end with December, but begin on your birthday and end with your following birthday. What you experience in the years of that particular tarot card might be a very literal definition of that card, or more of a special card meaning that resonates just for you. For example, when I have a Tower year, it is incredibly literal to the given definition of the Tower card. However, when I have a Moon year, the meaning of the Moon card is more specific to me. My personal tarot card for my birth date is The Sun. When I have a moon card year, there’s usually a masculine person who is playing a huge role in my life during those years (love interest or the birth of my son for me). The role of the tarot card for your individual year is based off of your personal planetary placements in your birth chart and will vary from person to person, not everyone’s Tower years will be like mine.
Here’s how you can calculate your life cycles:
We take your birthday and reduce it down to its numeric value. We’ll use my birthday for an example: April 23
April is the 4th month of the year, and 23 reduces to 2 + 3 = 5
4 + 5 = 9
We take 9 and add it to the year of your last birthday. The year is 2024 currently, and my last birthday was on April 23, 2024. 2024 reduces to an 8.
9 + 8 = 17
The 17th card in the tarot is: The Star (you can look up your tarot card numbers online.)
When we want to see the energy of the Star year (for me), we look back every 9 years from 2024 until we can no longer subtract 9 (because we get too close to the year we were born.)
My star years are: 2024, 2015, 2006, 1997, 1988
Note: If your birthday + current year when added together is over the number 21 you would reduce the number so it falls back into the major arcana.
For example: December 31, 2024 reduces to: 12 + 31 = 43 2024 = 8
43 + 8 = 51 We would take the 51 and reduce it to 5 + 1 = 6
Tarot card 6 is The Lovers
Tarot card numbers in order:
1.   MagicianÂ
2.   High PriestessÂ
3.   EmpressÂ
4.   EmperorÂ
5.   HierophantÂ
6.   Lovers
7.   ChariotÂ
8.   StrengthÂ
9.   HermitÂ
10. Wheel of FortuneÂ
11. Justice
12. The Hanged ManÂ
13. DeathÂ
14. TemperanceÂ
15.  DevilÂ
16.  The TowerÂ
17.  The StarÂ
18.  The MoonÂ
19.  The SunÂ
20.  JudgementÂ
21.  The WorldÂ
(we don’t include The Fool card as it’s card zero.)
When looking at the energy of our year, we always want to look at the tarot cards that come before and after the card we are currently in. For instance, the Tower comes after then the Devil and before the Star. After the Star is the Moon, the Sun, and the Judgment card. When we know what comes before and after our current year’s energy, we are better able to see our cycle and patterns with clarity.
2022 lines up with the years: 2013, 2004, 1995, 1986
2023 lines up with the years: 2014, 2005, 1996, 1987
2024 lines up with the years: 2015, 2006, 1997, 1988
2025 lines up with the years: 2016, 2007, 1998, 1989
2026 lines up with the years: 2017, 2008, 1999, 1990
2027 lines up with the years: 2018, 2009, 2000, 1991
Here are the events and under-laying energies of these cycles for me and how they line up for my personal year tarot cards. These examples will help you find your own life patterns.
2022 lines up with the years: 2013, 2004, 1995, 1986 = Devil card year
Devil years for me deals with themes of warnings, omens, and foretelling of changes to come. These years are the buildup of the roller coaster before it races downhill in the Tower years.
2023 lines up with the years: 2014, 2005, 1996, 1987 = Tower card year
Tower years bring about wild upheaval, home moves that close out one book and start a new one, the destruction of the past forever, the rocky beginning of a whole new life.
2024 lines up with the years: 2015, 2006, 1997, 1988 = Star card year
Star years bring about the slow rebuilding of the new life after the Tower. It’s a soft rain after the scorched earth of a lightning strike. There’s healing, growth, and finding a pathway forward out of the rubble.
2025 lines up with the years: 2016, 2007, 1998, 1989 = Moon card year
Significant masculine energy present. For me this was first crushes, first long term boyfriend, engagement, birth of a boy.
2026 lines up with the years: 2017, 2008, 1999, 1990 = Sun card year
A completion via a manifestation coming into fruition. These years can look like graduations, marriage, leaving a difficult situation for a more positive one, and finally getting what you’ve desired.
2027 lines up with the years: 2018, 2009, 2000, 1991 = Judgement card year
Judgement card years often bring the truth to light. This can be karma and/or fate. Positive, neutral, and negative. It shows you who you are, where you’re at, and where you need to go in the future. There can be a theme of awakening, becoming, and destiny.
Back to the nodal transits:
In the beginning, we talked about the nodal transits switching places every 9 years. To add more clarity and depth to the information, you’ll want to pay attention to the sign and houses that the nodes fall in every 9 years. If one year your north node is in Virgo in the 10th house, you may be called to fine tune and edit your public persona, you may start a new career or be thrust into the spotlight. 9 years later, when the north node is in Pisces in your 4th house, you may be desiring to work on your art (music, poetry, theater) or spiritual beliefs as you cultivate the type of home, family, or lifestyle you desire. The interpretation will be up to you based on your own chart, personal year tarot card, and your own past patterns. Even if you are not proficient in astrology, noticing the underlying energies over time in your cards and cycles will help you match up the themes of the nodes as they transition houses.
As a refresher, here is an example of the nodal transit, signs, and houses for my own years.
For example:
2024 north node in Aries in the 8th house
2015 north node in Libra in the 2nd house
2006 north node in Aries in the 8th house
1997 north node in Libra in the 2nd house
1988 north node in Aries in the 8th house
For me, Aries and Libra in the 8th and 2nd house, always deal with the themes of transformation relationships, money, and fear.
When the north node is in Aries, there is always a focus on my own independence and self reliance, while also dealing with other people’s money or support in some way whether I want to or not (gaining investors, inheritance, joining or splitting incomes, etc. As a child this looked like my parent’s willingness to put me in a small elementary school that was inconvenient for them in a variety of ways. It was the antidote to a giant public school near our house where I was failing to thrive. I had to rely on their wisdom and support in order to be more self reliant in a new environment.) In these years there is a focus on pursuing my own path and destiny, however, due to 8th house themes, other people are the backdrop to that capability. There can also be new marriage contracts or contracts broken. The 8th house permeates this time, with fears and uncertainty, and being forced to embrace social taboos in some way.
When the north node is in Libra in the 2nd house, there is always a relationship or relationships being born that are part of me moving into a time of ease and stability. These relationships are not like the 8th house relationships. These people are not supporting me physically as I face fears (often I’m the one supporting them), but there is a sense of soul family and moving into a time of having what I need to relax and move forward. There is still upheaval during the Tower years that fall in Libra: big moves, uncertainty, fluctuations that feel out of my control, but it’s less fearful and ripe with 2nd house themes like discovering what I value and what makes me feel secure.

It’s the Death card year for me!! It aligns with the 'restitution' theme in the 2024 reading. I'm staring at the sunrise on the card and will not catastrophize 😂
This is a star year for me also and I am definitely re-building after my tower year. North node for me right now is in my 12th house so I am letting go of painful patterns that interfere with my self interest and self-focus. South node in 6th house also helps me to shed daily routines and patterns that don’t fit me.
